Did you know that International Women’s Day is a public holiday in Mongolia? Let’s dive deeper into the topic.

A Day that Resonates Beyond the 24 Hours

This day holds special significance for Mongolians, who traditionally celebrate with family meals and gift-giving, expressing appreciation for the women in their lives. Beyond the celebration, It's a day that reminds everyone that achieving gender equality is not a one-off celebration, but a continuous journey that requires unwavering commitment and collective action. For expatriates residing in Mongolia, it's quite likely that you've come across the Unitel Group’s banner, vividly illustrating the impactful stories of historical women on the streets. So, what meaning do those banners hold?

This Year's Spotlight

On the occasion of International Women's Day, Unitel Group, Mongolia’s leading telecommunication company, starts the #FirstWomen'sStreet initiative, honoring Mongolian women who deserve to be remembered in history.

  • Beyond Recognition: But #FirstWomen'sStreet goes beyond mere recognition. It aims to spark a national conversation about the critical role women play in shaping Mongolia's future. FYI, there are 175 officially named streets in Ulaanbaatar, and 62 of them honor historical figures. Surprisingly, none of them bear the name of a historic Mongolian woman. In response to this issue, Unitel Group is bringing it as an issue to address and working to publicize 8 historical women including Mongolia's first female surgeon and first female astronomer.
  • A Call to Action: Through their website, Unitel Group is actively engaging the public, inviting them to learn about these remarkable women and participate in a poll to gather support for the #FirstWomen'sStreet initiative. The campaign has been receiving significant support from the public and relevant NGOs.

By the way, for an enlightening dive into the stories of Mongolia's pioneering figures, including the first female surgeon and a trailblazing female diplomat who once helmed UN subcommittees, consider exploring the details on their website. Lastly, Happy International Women’s Day!
